Fresh River Healthcare Expands Huntington’s Disease Program with Grant-Funded Equipment Enhancements

June 17, 2026

EAST WINDSOR, CT (June 17, 2026) – Fresh River Healthcare has taken a significant step forward in advancing care for individuals living with Huntington’s Disease (HD), announcing the successful implementation of new, specialized equipment funded through a state grant initiative.

The funding—awarded through Connecticut’s Nursing Home Specialized Unit Infrastructure Fund—supported approximately $135,000 in targeted investments to enhance the center’s already established HD program. The equipment has now been delivered, installed, and integrated into daily care, directly benefiting residents through improved safety, comfort, mobility, and quality of life.

Fresh River’s Huntington’s Disease Program is uniquely positioned as the only dedicated skilled nursing option in Connecticut specifically designed for individuals living with HD. While other centers may accommodate residents with movement disorders, Fresh River offers a fully specialized environment supported by trained professionals, tailored care plans, and strong clinical partnerships, including collaboration with UConn Health.

The newly deployed equipment reflects a comprehensive approach to the complex needs of residents with HD. Additions include advanced therapeutic seating systems, adaptive dining supports, mobility devices, floor-level safety beds, and specialized transfer equipment—all designed to address the progressive neurological and physical challenges associated with the disease. These enhancements improve day-to-day safety by reducing fall risk and physical strain while promoting comfort, dignity, mobility, and greater participation in therapy and social activities.

New equipment placed into service includes Accora FloorBed systems with safety accessories, Broda therapeutic seating and shower commodes, Carefoam positioning chairs, NuStep recumbent cross trainers, U-Step walking stabilizers, Sara Stedy sit-to-stand aids, Hoyer lift systems, weighted dining kits, adaptive utensils, and sensory-support items designed to create a more comfortable and supportive environment for residents living with HD.

For residents and caregivers, the impact is immediate and meaningful. Specialized seating and positioning systems help improve posture, reduce pressure injuries, and support residents experiencing involuntary movements. Mobility and transfer equipment allow for safer ambulation and caregiving assistance while reducing strain on staff. Adaptive dining tools and weighted supports help residents maintain greater independence during meals and daily activities.

The investment also reinforces Fresh River’s broader commitment to expanding access to high-quality HD care within Connecticut. Historically, individuals with Huntington’s Disease—particularly those with behavioral health complexities—have faced limited placement options, often requiring out-of-state care. By strengthening its program capacity and capabilities, Fresh River continues to help close that gap, allowing more individuals to receive specialized care closer to home.

Beyond the equipment itself, what distinguishes Fresh River’s program is the sense of community that surrounds it. Residents, families, and staff form a close-knit network built on understanding and shared experience. Holistic offerings such as tai chi, mindfulness-based activities, therapeutic recreation, and individualized support further enhance the environment.

With these latest enhancements now in use, Fresh River Healthcare continues to lead with compassion and innovation—delivering person-centered care that honors dignity, promotes safety, and improves quality of life for those living with Huntington’s Disease.
