EAST WINDSOR, CT (August 18, 2026) – This year, Fresh River Healthcare is celebrating a remarkable milestone: 50 years of caring for residents and families at 96 Prospect Hill Road in East Windsor.
The name on the building has changed over the decades, as has nearly every aspect of healthcare. But since 1976, the center on Prospect Hill Road has remained a strong part of the the East Windsor community.
Known through portions of its history as Prospect Hill Nursing Home, Prospect Hill Rehabilitation Center and Kettle Brook Care Center before becoming Fresh River Healthcare, the center’s evolution over five decades reflects the transformation of skilled nursing and long-term care itself.
Historical materials preserved by the center provide a glimpse into that evolution.
In October 1992, employees of what was then Prospect Hill Nursing Home received a letter announcing the facility’s acquisition by American Health Foundation and its new name: Kettle Brook. The letter spoke of creating an environment that residents, families and employees could look to “with pride.”
Extensive renovations followed. By the fall of 1993, the newly renovated Kettle Brook was holding grand-opening celebrations and presenting itself to the community as “A New England Country Premiere.” Period photographs show a facility very much of its era—formal dining rooms, brick interiors, patterned wallpaper and busy nurses’ stations—along with residents gathering for activities, rehabilitation and time outdoors.
The photographs and materials may look distinctly different from healthcare today, but many of the priorities described in them are surprisingly familiar: restoring independence, providing skilled and compassionate nursing care, offering rehabilitation, creating meaningful activities and maintaining a comfortable place for residents to call home.
That mission has continued while the care provided on Prospect Hill Road has grown increasingly specialized.
Today, Fresh River Healthcare is a 140-bed skilled nursing and rehabilitation center operated by iCare Health Network. In addition to short-term rehabilitation and long-term skilled nursing care, Fresh River has developed specialty programs serving individuals with complex neurological, cognitive and behavioral healthcare needs.
The center has become particularly well known for its Huntington’s Disease Program, the only dedicated skilled nursing option in Connecticut specifically designed for individuals living with Huntington’s Disease. Fresh River also provides specialized support for individuals living with Parkinson’s Disease, memory-related conditions and other complex neurological disorders.
Those programs represent just how dramatically the role of a nursing center has changed over 50 years. Residents today may require highly specialized clinical care, rehabilitation technology, behavioral health services and interdisciplinary support that would have been difficult to imagine when the facility first opened its doors in 1976.
Fresh River has continued to invest in that evolution. In 2026, approximately $135,000 in specialized equipment was added to support residents in its Huntington’s Disease Program, including investments aimed at improving mobility, safety, comfort and quality of life.
The center has also received recognition for its quality and clinical performance over the years, including being named a U.S. News & World Report Best Nursing Home in 2017-18. Most recently, Fresh River earned the 2026 Bronze – Commitment to Quality Award from the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living, a national recognition of the center’s commitment to continuous quality improvement.
The 50th anniversary represents generations of nurses, nursing assistants, therapists, dietary staff, recreation professionals, social workers, housekeepers, maintenance teams, administrators and countless others who have walked through the doors at 96 Prospect Hill Road to care for their neighbors.
It also represents thousands of residents and patients who have called the center home, whether for several weeks of rehabilitation or for many years. And it represents the families who have entrusted the center with the care of someone important to them.
Fresh River Healthcare and iCare Health Network will formally commemorate the center’s 50th anniversary with a celebration in late September, bringing together residents, families, staff, community members and others who have been part of its story.
As Fresh River prepares to celebrate this milestone, the center is also working to preserve more of its history. Former employees, residents and family members, community members, or anyone with photographs, stories, documents or knowledge of the center’s history are encouraged to contact iCare Health Network at moc.nheraci@ofni. These memories and materials can help tell a more complete story of the people and events that shaped the center over the past five decades.
More photos to come in future posts. An interesting detail can be seen in the photo below: a Bicentennial flag can be seen on the flag pole in the Prospect Hill brochure.
