“Community in Bloom”: iCare Health Network Exhibit Features Resident and Staff Creations

MANCHESTER, CT (May 28, 2026) – As part of this year’s National Skilled Nursing Care Week celebration, residents, staff, and families across iCare Health Network participated in a unique collaborative art initiative that transformed blank canvases into deeply personal expressions of creativity, memory, and community.

Each participating care center received the same starting point: a three-foot by three-foot blank canvas and an open invitation to create without rules or limitations. Residents and teams were encouraged to use any artistic style or medium they wished, allowing each canvas to reflect the personality and spirit of the people behind it.

While many of the works drew inspiration from this year’s National Skilled Nursing Care Week theme, Moments in Bloom, something unexpected emerged as the artwork came together. Despite no coordination between buildings, similar themes appeared repeatedly across centers — nature, peace, growth, movement, memory, color, and home.

The result became more than an art project. It evolved into a reflection of the shared culture that exists throughout iCare Health Network’s communities.

“The art show is officially open, and it’s amazing to see how each canvas has come to life through the contributions of residents and staff,” said Renee Cole, Director of Specialty Programming and Strategy. “This year’s Nursing Home Week theme, ‘Moments in Bloom,’ comes through in so many different ways throughout the artwork. The pieces are colorful, personal, and detailed, reflecting the pride, creativity, and experiences of the people who helped create them.

While the plan was to keep the exhibit on display at the iCare home office for an extended period, many of the care centers are already eager to bring their canvases back and display them in their own lobbies. What started as blank canvases turned into something people truly care about, and you can see how much time, thought, and heart went into every piece.”

The exhibit also highlighted the collaborative nature of skilled nursing communities, bringing together residents, recreation teams, nursing staff, family members, and administrators through a shared creative process. For many participants, the project offered an opportunity for self-expression, storytelling, and meaningful engagement.

The completed canvases are now being showcased in the hallways of iCare’s central office until they return to each care center for long term display.

More than simply displaying artwork, the exhibit serves as a reminder that creativity does not diminish with age and that meaningful experiences can emerge from something as simple as a blank canvas and an invitation to participate.
